Update on the French Drain

Remember this project?

Well, I finally found the right kind of pipe; decided I put down some landscaping cloth under additional pebbles so they wouldn’t sink into the dirt like the original ones oh, and get get some more pebbles for the project. I started installation today; this is what o have done so far.

Hope to have this finished up next week. :-). Then back to decluttering the guest bedroom closet. 😦

Room for Guests!

My Guest bedroom now has room for guests!

This is what the bed has been looking like since before christmas

(yes, it was my “staging” area for making presents)…and it just kept looking that way, until yesterday.

Now it looks like this!

Sheets and duvet cover laundered and freshened up.  I just may have to sleep in here, since it seems Roxy wants to take over the bed in the master bedroom.

9 bags, 360#s, 18 cubic feet, 6 cubic yards…

That’s how much mulch I have sitting in the back of my Tahoe stinking it up…

I should get back to decluttering the house… But at the moment the mulch is taking priority.

I just need to stop buying mulch for the backyard until I have the decluttering work for the day done.

I suppose I could do both in a day; maybe I should limit my mulch

buying to 5 bags a day…but then I would be spending a lot more in gas to get more bags every other day or so until the backyard is done.  Did I mention I have a huge backyard??  I’m guessing I will need a minimum of 40 cubic yards, so far I have only abou 15 cubic yards, counting what is in the truck…  Here are a few pics.

There is more yard to the left and behind the pool as well.

Better get busy!

More Guest Room Cleaning

Back to the guest bedroom and the bottom part of the china cabinet

What was in there ?  Well, the box on the top shelf was filled with miscellaneous sewing stuff.  The material items – table clothes.  I will go through all this and decide what to do with it, and of course, re-organize what I keep.

The box on the bottom – old costume jewelry.  That will be sorted through and put up for sale on ebay/craigslist or in an upcoming garage sale.  What doesn’t sell will be donated. 🙂

Pictures?  Yes, a few pictures – a couple of my nieces when they were really little, and a couple of art pieces that I need to decide if I want to keep (and if so, where to display them).

Beautiful Weather

We had fabulous weather in Houston this past weekend.  As a result, I spent most of my time outside.

With the front yard looking great (ok, good), I started tackling my weed ridden and dog trampled back yard.  Right now my FAVORITE garden tool is a battery powered handheld tiller by Black & Decker.  One small problem – the battery doesn’t last that long – maybe 1/2 hr – 45 minutes.  But that is okay, because by then I am ready for a break from the tiller.  🙂   I also got some mulch put down around some of the rose bushes, the citrus trees, and a few other trees.

My BIG project was clearing out dirt and river rock from a french drain I have running along the side of the house.  It had (yes, had), a french drain pipe in it – but the dogs decided to remove it in an effort to catch geckos.  (UGH!)  They also decided to fill it with dirt…  So, first thing to repairing it, clearing out the rock and the dirt.

Here is what I got accomplished…

All cleared out and ready for a new French drain pipe

My type A personality at work, for the first section I cleared out anyway…

My messy personality soon took hold. Rocks thrown over the hedge just to get them out of the trench…

Yes, at one point I thought it was a good idea to put rocks in the birthbath? Why? Who knows…

Stay tuned for the finished project (that will probably be a few weeks away…)

The weather in Houston last weekend and this past week has been absolutely fabulous during the day, sunny and in the 70’s during the day, chilly at night (40’s); that, along with the “spring forward” in time, leaves a lot of sun in the early evenings.  As a result, I have been distracted.  My neighbors have been planting spring flowers and my front flower beds were a shame – mostly clover and weeds, needing some TLC.

So… while I don’t have “before pictures” this is what I was distracted with this past week, and didn’t get much in the way of decluttering done.

Question – does weeding the garden count as decluttering the flowerbeds?  🙂

DSCN3974 DSCN3975 DSCN3976 DSCN3977 DSCN3978 DSCN3979That’s “Mr. Froggy” on the rock.  My neighbors bring their little children and grandchildren by to visit him.  It is so cute, the kids stop to pet the frog!  Made my day.

Grandma’s Shovel

Remember this from my rusty tool post?

It now looks like this after a good soak in the vinegar/water mixture and a bit of mineral oil.  I did have to soak this shovel for a couple of days, it was so rusty.  I probably should have sanded it a little bit before soaking it, that may have helped to remove the rust faster.

Almost like new!

The bucket I had this in wasn’t deep enough to get the neck of the shovel, so I just sanded it down.  In the future I will get this into a deeper bucket to clean up the rest of the rust on the neck.
